Rooftop Invited Competition

An invited competition to design a new retail, entertainment & office precinct. This scheme presents a rooftop place that is less uniform, less structured and more organic in industrial form and character. It is inspired by the faded and redundant existing roof elements; a raw, yet comfortable - distorted and durable - fuzzy feedback form that evolves and responds to the metabolism of the place - and aims to create zero waste.

Carpet Couch 02

Remnant carpet, which has been salvaged from the tip, lines not only the walls ... has been fashioned into a comfortable couch ... Reusing carpet has become an integral part of the PHOOEY mission for 'zero waste' in its projects. "Carpet is the first thing you rip out; it's underfoot and so gets the most wear," says Ho, "and 96 per cent of it - 2.1 billion kilograms a year - is dumped into landfill. With its high embodied energy, the challenge is how to make that 96 per cent worth something."

Kaleidoscope Arts & Crafts Studio

The 300-square-metre warehouse floats directly over ground-level studios occupied by artists and industrial designers. The warehouse is connected to the studios via an internal staircase, as well as benefiting from its own street address. Once used as a manufacturing headquarters, the original space was sparse. 'After the ceiling panels were removed, you could appreciate the volume,' says Young, pointing out the 5-metre raked ceiling.

Zedi Hair Salon

Zedi, the reincarnation of a two storey brick warehouse as a hairdressing salon, started with the client's brief to create a sustainable 'temple of hair' ... Zedi is the Burmese name for the stepped dome of Buddhist pagodas in South East Asia. In this salon project, the metaphor of the dome's steps leading to enlightenment is elaborated as an intention to enlighten the community about sustainability ...
