Park House

Only the Heritage significant front portion of this extremely run-down (uninhabitable) Victorian workers cottage was worth keeping. The block was fortuitously wide enough to enable the introduction of a generous new side entry foyer which now delivers visitors into the centre of the house.

This enabled the inversion of the traditional terrace renovation. All internal walls were removed from the vestigial existing house to create a sun-filled open-plan Kitchen, Lounge & Dining area which now overlooks the Northern front yard, quiet street & linear park beyond.

The old front door has become a glazed connection between the Living areas & the North-facing productive garden (including possum-proof vegie patch) and to the quiet street & park beyond.

At the centre of the house is a large landscaped courtyard accessed via large sliding glazed doors which peel back to blur the indoor-outdoor boundary and enable the infusion of light & air into all parts of the house.

In the words of the Owner:

PHOOEY have designed a calm sanctuary, with public areas that look out to the world & offer connection to the passing neighbours and private areas which are introspective and peaceful.

This is achieved by flipping the classical layout of the terrace house including the garden spaces.

It fulfils my dream of having a productive garden in the inner city where I can sit on the verandah and soak in the sunshine.

The house is simple but with enough nooks and crannies that the kids can run around for hours allowing the adults to enjoy a glass or two.
