Brighton House

Brighton house is a new double storey, split level dwelling. It nestles unobtrusively amongst its predominantly neo-georgian suburban neighbours.

It is an energy & water efficient home with many sustainable features.

The Owners previously lived & traveled extensively throughout the Middle East. They were keen to incorporate arched windows & various other decorative elements which would inspire nostalgia & complement their collection of smaller Middle Eastern artefacts.

Materials were selected on the basis of durability with a preference for a gentle palette. Limestone is complemented by a duo of sand-coloured colorbonds outlined with black trims. Glass & wire balustrades maximise light infusion & transparency. Recycled jarrah floors are friends with the timber courtyard balconies & decks, timber veneer kitchen, timber blinds, skirtings & architraves.

The design features three significant external garden areas (entry, courtyard & rear).

A single storey garage & workshop overlook an Australian bush garden at street level.

The natural site levels fall away from the street, enabling the house to gently cascade past a central courtyard, which enables penetration of light & a sense of community for the occupants.

The rear living area opens to a shaded North facing alfresco patio & swimming pool.

Two sets of stairs (at front & rear) enable a diversity of circulation options & more challenging games of hide and seek for the younger occupants & visitors.

Many salvaged materials & offcuts were upcycled to contribute to the final design outcome. The Owners continued to foster this approach following occupation, using leftover offcuts to DIY a raised vegie garden, bin enclosure, entry mat & framed entry mirror.
